Impacts of Information and Communication Technology on Personal Health

Subtitle

One of the main injuries that people who don't work in an ergonomic environment face is carpal tunnel syndrome. This injury is caused by doing the same actions or gestures (such as typing) for a very long time. This injury causes extreme pain your hand (specifically in the blue area on the image to the left). Doing the same actions for a long time would cause a compression in the median nerve which controls. The symptoms of carpal tunnel syndrome start with some frequent burning and numbness in the thumb. The symptoms then become worse where the victim would have a hard time gripping things and feels some tingling. This injury is three times more common in women, and this is because they have a smaller carpal tunnel.

Eye strain or headaches are also the caused by a bad work space. Eye strain or headaches are caused by being in a room that is too dim where the screen is really bright, or being in a room that is too bright and there is too much glare. This can be avoided by having good lighting that does not flicker and is not too bright or too dim but is in between. To avoid glare, the screen must also be glare-resistant!

You will eventually get fatigue if you work too much. Fatigue can also be caused if the walls of your work environment are bright colors. The best way to minimize fatigue is to have neutral colored walls so your eyes wouldn't get tired. Other ways you can minimize your fatigue is to take breaks while you are working and within those breaks, you can go outside and enjoy the fresh air. You can also do some exercises inside your work space and afterwards, you can go back to work. Exercising and getting some fresh air are some really good ways to minimize your fatigue and are healthier than drinking coffee or energy drinks.
